So when applying to this program I didn’t know that I could apply to go directly to the second year of the program. When I heard about this I started thinking about the amount of experience I have over my other classmates and so I asked the womenswear course coordinator if I could discuss the situation with her. She instantly became very short with me and told me how students who go directly into the second year are usually overwhelmed and struggle, but I have an appointment with her on Friday (10-2-09) at 12:00pm so hopefully with the help of my portfolio I can show her that I have enough experience to start at the second year, plus it saves me money. Wish me luck!

First Day of School
Well it was sort of my first day of school today (9-29-09) but it was mainly getting us into groups for a project. So this is how it started: some where around 300 students either in womenswear, menswear, fashion jewelry, or textiles were crammed into a very small canteen (a.k.a. cafeteria), which soon became unbearably hot. We were then herded like cattle to another room where we were split up into smaller groups and then given a project. The project is comprised of two pieces: a) deconstruct/ reconstruct- we were given 4 vintage garments and we, as a team of six, are supposed reconstruct them into a new outfit; b) Research- this is where we as a team are supposed to go explore places of reference around London, such as museums, department stores and boutiques and what not. Some how our group got messed up and we ended up with 6 people instead of 5 and not only that we had too many womenswear designers (4 in total when there we only supposed to be 2), 2 textile designers and no fashion jewelry person. On top of this none of them can really sew, I don’t think any of them can draft their own patterns and so it might end up with me doing all the technical work. Fun times are ahead……
Shock Value
Everything here so expensive to buy here! I feel like there is always some place in America where you can find great deals for things like kitchenware and home supplies. But here it seems like my money is flying out of my pocket, and I have really only been buying stuff for my apartment (flat) and for things like traveling on the underground, which is expensive as well. Right no the exchange rate is about $1.60 per £1.00. Another factor playing role in my financial status is waiting for my US school loans to go through, which will be another week or so.
London Here I AM!
Hey everyone, so I made it here to London in one piece and it’s beautiful! Every building is so beautiful here and they all look like there’s tons of history behind, in fact I walked past a building with a placard saying that Mozart lived and composed music in it, it’s way cool to be here. I haven’t really checked out any of the touristy places in the past week that I’ve been here but I will be doing that soon. I have visited Oxford street, which for those of you that are unfamiliar with London it is the place to go shopping! Fortunately/unfortunately one of the facilities for my school is right on Oxford, so let’s hope I can keep my wallet closed!
